A Green Cake is a beautiful gift for the mom or mom-to-be who needs a diaper wardrobe for her brand new baby. Did you know that diapers are one of the most requested gifts by new parents? These diapers also make the best burp cloths and changing pads, and WOW, a lot of those are needed, too! Imagine a baby in disposable diapers until age 2, using an average of 10 diapers per day and much more in the beginning. Over those 2 years that child would use 7,300 diapers, which would affect our pocketbooks and our earth. Choosing cloth diapers over disposables means investing more in the beginning, but from birth to potty learning can save parents from $500-$2,000!! Imagine how the savings multiply when you save your cloth diapers to use for the second or third baby!
Ingredients of my creations include luxuriously soft unbleached Indian cotton prefold diapers, of which I typically use Infant and Regular sizes. Infant 4x8x4 prefolds are 12” x 16” before washing and fit babies from 7-10 lbs. Regular 4x6x4 prefolds are 14.5” x 21” and fit babies from 15-30 lbs. The layers of woven cotton are less on the sides, and more in the middle, where absorbency is needed most.
These diapers are prepared for use! The prepping process includes washing on hot with a touch of additive-free detergent (I use Planet), double rinse, then dry on hot. This is done three times to strip the natural oils from the cotton and to cause the fabric to quilt. Stripping oils and quilting both cause the diaper to become absorbent, and they will become more so with use.
